What Is Humic And Fulvic Acid?

Humic and Fulvic acids are both humic substances (along with humin), meaning it’s a naturally occurring chemical formed when plants and animals break down (dissolved organics) in the soils in other words known as stable compounds that are resistant to further decomposition. Over time, these massive beds of decaying material were covered by sand and rock formations, and they were compressed into even richer deposits. Some deposits were then uplifted, and oxygen was reintroduced to the material, which significantly aids the formation of Humic acids. These uplifted deposits are mined near the surface, and are often referred to as “leonardite”. This is where most humic acid products come from today.

Humic acids are long chain molecules that are high in weight and are dark brown in color. Fulvic acids are much smaller molecules and are natural gray in color. Humic acids exist naturally as part of nature’s life cycle in soils, oceans, and streams.

Humic substances are essential to the next generation of plant life. They are responsible for transforming inorganic minerals into ionic forms that can easily be absorbed through plant roots, chelating toxins in the soil to keep them from damaging plants, increasing plant cell permeability, and increasing soil microbial activity. The interesting thing about this is that animals and humans receive very similar benefits from humic substances.

Why Do We Need Humic And Fulvic Acids?

For centuries, Humic and Fulvic acids have proven to be highly beneficial for farmers, both of which are essential for healthy plants. We used to eat our crops with Humic and Fulvic residues, so supplements were not necessary. Unfortunately, our modern farming practices have almost completely eliminated this essential part of our diet.

It’s common practice to treat our crops, whether conventional or organic, with pesticides and herbicides to increase yields. As a result, our soils can’t maintain the healthy bacterial ecosystem needed to produce humic substances. Due to this cascade effect, our crops receive fewer minerals from the soil and thus produce fewer vitamins.

According to several studies, US crops today contain significantly less calcium, iron, potassium, vitamins A and C, and many other nutrients than 50 years ago. Therefore, even consuming fresh fruits, vegetables, legumes, and other plant foods does not guarantee nutritional fulfillment.

Brain Health

Our brains are under constant attack by free radicals, but Fulvic acid may help limit the number of active free radicals in the body through its antioxidant potential.

Furthermore, free radicals can cause abnormal tau proteins to build up in our brains. Tau proteins are essential in the proper functioning of our neurons, but when they mutate, our bodies are not able to effectively remove them. Thus, they build up and become a contributing factor to various degenerative cognitive diseases such as Alzheimer’s.

The Benefits Of Humic And Fulvic

Humic and Fulvic support nearly every area of health and wellness and they can even help you get more from your other supplements.

Improves Detoxification

Similarly to Humic and Fulvic acids that protect plants from toxins in the soil, these acids also help protect us from toxins in several ways. To begin with, Humic acid works by binding to and breaking down toxins in the digestive tract. Secondly, Fulvic acid improves cell permeability at the cellular level. As a result, toxic byproducts are released instead of being trapped inside cells. Upon release, immune cells target these toxins and eliminate them.

Helps Boost Nutrient Absorption

Fulvic acid molecules effectively bind with nutrients and are capable of carrying many times its own weight in vitamins and ionic minerals. Fortunately, fulvic molecules are so small that our bodies absorb them easily, even when carrying so many nutrients. As these molecules travel throughout the body, they can help improve cell permeability by donating electrons to cell membranes. This is important because cell membranes must have adequate, balanced electrical energy to function correctly. At this point, the molecules can pass the nutrients they carry to cells where they can support numerous biological processes.

Humic and Fulvic acquiring enough electrolytes and other trace minerals is important for proper metabolic functions, digestive health and nutrient assimilation.

Boost Digestion

Pesticide residues, medications, and poor food choices frequently threaten the health of our digestive systems. Overtime, the intestinal lining that prevents unwanted bacteria, toxins, and food particles from entering the body can become damaged. As a result, inflammation and leaky gut develops and our ability to absorb nutrients declines.

Fortunately, in addition to its ability to restore the body’s natural pH balance, Humic acid can also improve gut health by encouraging healthy bacteria growth in the intestines.

Immune Function

Humic acid helps nourish the digestive tract and also boost the ability of “good bacteria” to repopulate and form a healthy “microbiome” environment. We need a strong digestive system to build immunity, help control hormone production, regulate appetite, reduce stress response, and much more.

The microbiome—the community of friendly bacteria that make up our immune system—is the front line in our battle against illness.
